My GAME Plan

Through my masters course at Walden, I have been able to open my eyes to the value of technology in Physical Education. This week, I am focusing on two NETS-T (National Educational Technology Standards for Teachers) Indicators that I feel confident in performing through my teaching.

The first indicator is Standard 2. a. -design and adapt relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity. To strengthen my confidence in this standard, I plan to incorporate blogging into my lesson plans, at least once a week. For example, during study hall, after a P.E. class, students will be required to log in and view the two reflective questions posted in my blog. Next, they will answer the questions in their own blog, and then respond to two or more of their classmates posts. I will monitor the progress of these blogs daily, and challenge the students to continue the discussion throughout the week. The next time I see the students in class, I will bring up some of the discussions that I had read on their blogs. To extend my learning, I could bring a laptop into the gymnasium and project the blogs onto the big screen so all the students could view some of the blogs I am discussing in class that day. Or, I could use the laptop and projector screen to help guide the students in strategies to improving their blog discussions. I will evaluate my learning by reflecting on the students blogs to see if they are transferring the information from the classroom into their group discussions. In addition, I will be able to assess if the students understood the content from class more effectively by viewing each students blog.

The second indicator that I want to strengthen my confidence in is Standard 5. d. - contribute to the effectiveness, vitality, and self-renewal of the teaching profession and of their school and community. I plan to achieve this goal by attending local workshops, and my Ohio PE conference, both of which will focus on implementing technology into the classroom. In the past, I have not taken the initiative to view the workshops focusing on technology, because I did not see the need for my content. However, this past year, I made technology the focus on all the sessions I attended at my Ohio PE state convention. I learned valuable techniques and tools that I was able to transfer into my daily Physical Education routine. For example, I now have my 5th grade students track their activity time and steps taken through pedometers, which they wear every class. In order to monitor my progress in this standard, I plan to seek out other local workshops that are offered in my district and at neighboring universities. I will be able to evaluate my progress by whether I attend more workshops and implement more technology into my classroom.

  1. I really enjoyed reading your post about your GAME plan and ways you have incorporated technology into your PE classes! As a content area teacher, I would like to suggest that you see if one of the fifth grade teachers at your school would like to collaborate with you on a project involving the pedometers. Possibly the math teacher would like to have students set-up spreadsheets tracking steps in PE for a certain period of time to create a data set. The data could then be used for several different things. Perhaps finding the mean, median, mode, and range for each student and the fifth grade as a whole. As a math teacher, I think this would be a great way to integrate PE and math. Good luck with your goals!

  2. Cortney,

I think you have a great game plan for incorporating technology into your PE classes. I think it would be quite hard to do so and you have some great ideas. I think recording students showing others how to do things and showing it to students on the computer would be a great way to introduce new skills to your students next year and years after.

  3. I love your blogging idea! You have a great plan on how to monitor their progress and I feel the students will get a lot out of it. It will really keep them motivated if they know they're discussions will be brought up during class. Great idea and good luck!

  4. Coleen,
I love your idea of involving our math teachers to track the student’s steps in a graph. I am going to talk to them about out this idea for next year. Thank you so much for your input. After reading your post, I reflected on the idea of putting a pedometer on the teacher and a few target students for a few weeks and comparing their steps. In addition, the teacher and students could measure their walking stride, and compare the results using the different stride data. Thank you again for the great idea.

  5. Cortney,

I love your idea of having students respond to blogs. I also could not agree more with the time slot you have selected. I find that my students often need time to unwind after a powerful and energetic P.E. lesson and I think that your students will be engaged in productive work instead of just losing time having trouble being refocused.

I also really like that you will be able to track your students' growth over the year as all of the evidence will be on your blog. Do you work with many English Language Learners? This would be perfect documentation to show their growth in English usage.
