Hello, I am a elementary Physical Education Teacher (K-5) in Northeast, Ohio). Here are some thoughts about the positive effects blogging might have in Physical Education.
In Physical Education, I feel I can use a student blog for reflection of couse material. For example, throughout a sports unit, I could have the students blog at home or during student assist time to reflect on what they have learned individually, and as a team. A PE blog would allow students the freedom to share the positives and negatives of a unit, and reflect upon the skills they have learned. Most of the time in class, only a few students get to reflect on the lesson, during our closure. I do not call on every student at the end of class, because most of my class sizes are 25 or more. However, if I had the students blog, I would be able to take the time and read all of their posts and feelings. In addition, using this technology tool would give me new insight on improvements that I can make in my unit, and maybe even improve on my teaching style.

Hi Cortney, Do most of your students have access to the internet at home or an opportunity to blog while in school? I was thinking too about how many of the games and activities played in PE can be played in neighborhood pick-up games. Maybe you could have a video demonstration of proper positioning (how to hold a bat for example) or the rules of the game posted for parent referees. I would have loved to check out that as a student because we brought alot of the games played in school home. I applaud your efforts at bringing technology into Physical Education.

ReplyDeleteThis seems like a great idea! Would this be part of the class assignments or supplemental? Do you have a rubric picked out?

Great ideas you have here! I think one challenge you might face with this would be getting access to the technology in the gym. Do you have computers convienent for you in the gym? If not you could see if you could get the classroom teachers on board to let the students blog during free classtime. Another roadblock might be a time issue. I know at our school PE is only about 30 minutes after all the traveling time to/from the classroom. If you have a time issue maybe they can blog only once a unit or once a week. Just some ideas for you. I think it would be great for the students to have blogging experiences in PE and they would enjoy getting to show off their skills online :)
ReplyDeleteCderosa, thank you for responding to my blog. Yes, most of my students do have access to a computer at their home. I think you bring up a great idea on how I could incorporate Physical Education at home. Your idea also got me thinking about the video I use for demonstrating the skill. I was thinking I could pick a student of the week and allow them to be the demonstration student that shows the skills being taught. Thanks for your ideas.
ReplyDeleteThe Miles', thank you for responding to my blog. To answer your questions, I would not use the computers in the gymnasium. At my school, we have computer labs that I can access whenever needed, as long as I sign up for the lab in advance. I do agree with you about the time constraint I will face if I try to incorporate technology during class time. When I described the students blogging, I was ideally thinking they could do this during their study hall time when they work on homework. In addition, I could offer a teacher prep period to meet with students, in the computer lab, who needed help. Let me know if you have any other suggestions or ideas.
